Located only ten miles away from the cultural and educational resources of Center City, Haverford spans the townships of Lower Merion and Haverford respectively. It is nationally known as the home of the prestigious Haverford College. Northside Haverford is also considered one of suburban Philadelphia’s most sought-after residential areas.Like many Main Line communities, Haverford initially functioned as a summer destination for families looking to escape Philadelphia’s extreme heat. As wealthy railroad executives began taking up permanent residence in Haverford, railroad development spurred on residential progress, streamlining the city commute. Farmland soon transformed into large manors and gardens, and these sprawling estates became a staple of Haverford’s landscape. Several historical estates still remain today, demonstrating the enormity of these 31 to 76 acre homes.
Haverford’s outstanding educational facilities form an integral part of the town’s community. The renowned Haverford College, founded in 1833, is the first college to be created by the Society of Friends in the United States. The college spans a full 225 acres and cooperates with the University of Pennsylvania and Bryn Mawr College to provide students with a richer curriculum choice. The grounds of Haverford College also contain lush recreational facilities such as softball playing fields and a three-mile jogging course for students and residents alike.
The town also houses The Haverford School for Boys (www.haverford.org), one of the best private schools in the nation. a leader in boys' education since 1884, The Haverford School is far and away the most prominent boy’s school in the Philadelphia region. The school grooms young boys to become strong members of society by instilling within a strong character and sense of leadership.
Haverford’s retail center can be found at the intersection of Station Road and Lancaster Avenue, consisting of numerous attractive, interesting shops. One of the town’s most interesting landmarks, Haverford Hotel, used to be located at the corner of Grays Lane and Montgomery Avenue. Built in 1913, the noble brick hotel symbolized the town’s grandeur, with stately white columns and a cordial porch entrance. Its fifty rooms lay adorned with lavish furnishing and tasteful décor. The hotel was also host to the wedding reception of President Eisenhower’s granddaughter. In 1973, the hotel was torn down, replaced by Gray’s Lane House, an apartment condominium designed by Vincent King.
Haverford is most strongly characterized by the wide range of outstanding homes that mark its landscape.
