Gladwyne - Properties
Gladwyne, a small town around 4,000 in Lower Merion Township, enjoys an intimate atmosphere with premier Main Line status. With many commercial, spiritual, scholastic, and recreational opportunities available, Gladwyne will truly exceed the expectations of both resident and visitor alike.Originally named Merion Square by its first Quaker settlers, Gladwyne was the first village to emerge in the area now known as Lower Merion Township. While some of the first town structures were log cabins, stone houses and mills soon sprung up along Mill Creek. Although some still today as converted homes and offices, the stone mill ruins stand as a testament to Gladwyne’s old mill industry.
After the Civil War, wealthy Philadelphia businessmen began to recognize Gladwyne’s charm and appeal. They purchased the existing farms to build summer residences, which soon became year-round homes. As with much of the Main Line, development of regal estates and mansions soon followed. In 1927, however, these large plots were parceled out among the town to maintain the quaint village feel of Gladwyne.
Because of its small size, Gladwyne is primarily residential, leaving it to the neighboring towns of Bryn Mawr and Villanova, just minutes away, to supply major retail shopping.
Still, the little village is not without its own local flavor. One can still find stately English Tudor Manors upon sprawling grounds that still serve as residences. Gladwyne is also distinguished by the Delaware Market House, a chic specialty food store. While local shoppers may count on the Market House for everyday goods, it is famous for its gourmet foods, which the market delivers directly to residents’ doors.
Another favored landmark is the famous Guard House Inn (www.guardhouseinn.com). This historic Gladwyne building serves as one of the finest dining establishments in the Philadelphia area. Constructed in 1790, the Old Guard Inn is rumored to have once housed George Washington. The Inn is renowned for its superior winery and world-class cuisine. Adding to Gladwyne’s charm, the Guard House Inn serves up old world, romance in Main Line style.
With a wide range of recreational activities to choose from, Gladwyne is an ideal choice for a tasteful family. While it locally houses Rolling Hill Park, Valley Forge is a mere
20 minutes away, and offers activities like fly fishing, horseback riding, hiking and bicycling among others. Gladwyne, a small village with large character, affords both residents and visitors a unique glimmer of Pennsylvanian and American history. Its quaint feel, rustic scenery, and safe neighborhoods make Gladwyne one of the most preferred residential offerings on the Main Line.
