Radnor - Homes for Sale
The town of Radnor is located adjacent to Wayne in Radnor Township. As a suburb of Philadelphia, Radnor is known for its quality public school system, rated as one of the finest in the nation. In 1663, Radnor was settled by 40 Quakers from Radnorshire, Wales. It had was previously been home to the Lenni Lenape Indians. With the advent of the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1832, Radnor became more accessible to the city, and the town began to acquire more residential neighborhoods. New hotels and settlements formed along the railroad. The neighboring town of Wayne arose as one of the country’s first suburban developments – served by electricity as well as heating, water and sewer systems. This development added 3,800 residents to Radnor Township, increasing as well the number of inhabitants in the town of Radnor.
Philadelphia’s wealthy industrialists built beautiful country mansions on the Main Line, developing the area’s popularity and status. Unfortunately, the beautiful estates had to be subdivided into developments as a result of the world wars. Luckily one of the largest standing estates, Androssan Farm, still exists today. As for other estates, some were turned into commercial centers, schools, colleges, country clubs, and religious institutions.
The Radnor area has many attractive points of interests for all potential residents, adults and children alike. There are many green parks, playgrounds and athletic fields. These parks and facilities offer residents and visitors a variety of activities, including playing fields, nature areas, picnic areas, fishing creeks and ponds, jogging tracks, hiking and fitness trails, as well as the swimming pool at Radnor High School pool.
To preserve Radnor’s high quality living, however, new construction is kept at a minimum. Community leaders wish to preserve open space and, more importantly, preserve the indigenous trees and natural landscape of Radnor. The emphasis on community upkeep adds volumes to the town’s high residential desirability. Although Radnor does limit new construction, the town still continues to grow, with heavy investment made into existing structures. Radnor’s sophisticated shops and businesses help create a town feel with all the benefits of a large city nearby.
