The town of Bryn Mawr lies on the Montgomery-Delaware county border and is divided up among the townships of Lower Merion, Radnor, and Haverford. Just west of Philadelphia, Bryn Mawr is known for its many excellent private schools and exemplary colleges, including Bryn Mawr College and The American College, and magnificent arboretums.The town of Bryn Mawr was born in 1704 when Rowland Ellis, a Welsh tobacco plantation owner, built a large manor house on the town’s current location, calling it Bryn Mawr, meaning “high hill.” Later named Humphreyville after the its owners, a rural community began to grow in the area. Around 1869, the Pennsylvania Railroad came to Bryn Mawr (its name now reverted to its original form) and gradually, transformed the community from minute outpost to thriving town.
Bryn Mawr came to be known as an attractive, exclusive locality with the birth of Merion Cricket Club (1865), the Radnor Hunt Club (1887) and the Bryn Mawr Polo Club (1898). As lavish estates began to dot the landscape, prominent educational institutions soon followed suit. Such facilities include the Bryn Mawr Public School, the private Shipley and Baldwin School, and the nationally renowned Bryn Mawr College. Bryn Mawr College, first created by Dr. Joseph E. Taylor in 1880, has become an important focus of the town, and currently owns eighty acres of the first railroad property. The town continues to grow intellectually and architecturally through the construction of new school structures and additional condominium and apartment buildings.
In its modern incarnation, the Bryn Mawr community still retains its original appeal. New shops housed adjacent to the railroad offer specialty shopping opportunities as well as a variety of restaurants, coffee bars, and bookstores. One notable locale, The Point, provides a haven for singer-songwriters that draws audiences from all around the Philadelphia area.
The town of Bryn Mawr host many chains such as Barnes & Noble’s bookstores, CVS and Eckerd drug stores, Acme grocery stores, Staples office supplies. In the nearby Norristown shopping complex, further national retailer are only minutes away, including Target, Best Buy, Ikea, Circuit City, Home Depot, and Bed, Bath and Beyond. A Short twenty minute drive to the largest mall of the east Coast, the King of Prussia Mall, provides even more shopping options.
Another reason for Bryn Mawr’s high desirability is its specialty services. In addition to traditional health care, The Bryn Mawr Hospital offers a special sports medicine clinic. The Bryn Mawr playground and Bryn Mawr Community Center also present special athletic programs to residents of all ages.
While Bryn Mawr suburban community affords numerous amenities, perhaps most appealing is its proximity to Philadelphia (a scant eleven miles away) and other major cities. New York and Washington D.C are also a relatively close distance away, with New York 105 miles to the north and DC 130 miles to the south. The nearby New Jersey shore and the Pocono Mountain also present the perfect getaways.
